Your numbers, with every step of the arithmetic shown
Numerology is a traditional symbolic system, and this page treats it exactly that way: the calculations are performed faithfully to each system’s published rules, every addition and reduction is printed so you can check it by hand, and the meanings attached to the numbers are presented as what they are, tradition and entertainment, not fact or prediction. Choose the Pythagorean system (the modern Western standard) or the Chaldean system (the older mapping with different letter values), enter a birth date, a name, or both, and the page works the numbers in the open.
Disclaimer: This calculator gives estimates for general information only. It is not financial, medical or other professional advice. Numerology is presented here for entertainment and cultural interest; its interpretations are traditional symbolism, not evidence-based guidance, and no life decision should rest on them.
What this calculator does
It works the core numbers of the chosen system with the arithmetic exposed. From a birth date: the Life Path (all digits of the date summed and reduced), the Birthday number (the day of the month reduced), and a Personal Year for any year you name (birth month and day reduced, added to the target year reduced). From a name: the Expression number (every letter’s value summed), the Soul Urge (vowels only), and the Personality number (consonants only), under the selected system’s letter mapping, both of which are printed in the method section. Reduction follows the traditions’ shared rule: sum the digits repeatedly until a single digit remains, except that the master numbers 11, 22 and 33 stop the reduction, and the results say when one has been kept.
How to use it
- Pick the system before comparing numbers. Pythagorean and Chaldean assign different values to the same letters (R is 9 in one, 2 in the other), so a name’s numbers are statements inside a system. Comparing across systems is comparing translations; the page implements each faithfully so the comparison is at least honest.
- The name is the name as used. Traditions differ on birth names versus current names; this calculator works on whatever you enter and shows the letter-by-letter values it used, so different spellings can be tried openly. Accented letters should be entered as their base letters (é as e), as the mappings cover A-Z.
- Vowels are A, E, I, O, U here. Y is counted as a consonant, the common convention; traditions that treat Y contextually exist, and the steps printed let you adjust by hand if yours is one of them.
- Read the steps, not just the answer. The reduction chain is the content: it is what lets you verify a result, reproduce it from a book, or spot where two websites disagree (usually the master-number rule or the letter table, both stated here).
- Hold the meanings lightly. The short traditional associations printed with each number are the folklore of the system. They are included because a numerology page without them would be a calculator with its subject removed, and labelled as entertainment because that is what they are.
How it is calculated
- Pythagorean letters: A=1, B=2, C=3, D=4, E=5, F=6, G=7, H=8, I=9, J=1, K=2, L=3, M=4, N=5, O=6, P=7, Q=8, R=9, S=1, T=2, U=3, V=4, W=5, X=6, Y=7, Z=8 (the alphabet cycling 1-9).
- Chaldean letters: A=1, B=2, C=3, D=4, E=5, F=8, G=3, H=5, I=1, J=1, K=2, L=3, M=4, N=5, O=7, P=8, Q=1, R=2, S=3, T=4, U=6, V=6, W=6, X=5, Y=1, Z=7 (the value 9 is held sacred in this tradition and assigned to no letter).
- Reduction: while the number has more than one digit and is not 11, 22 or 33, replace it with the sum of its digits. Life Path: sum every digit of the birth date, then reduce. Personal Year: reduce the birth month, the birth day and the target year separately, add, then reduce.
Worked examples
A life path, step by step. Born 17 May 1990. Digits: 1+9+9+0+0+5+1+7 = 32, then 3+2 = Life Path 5. The Birthday number is 17 reduced, 8. The Personal Year for 2026: month 5, day 8, year 2+0+2+6 = 10 reduced to 1; 5+8+1 = 14, reduced to 5. Every step is arithmetic a pencil can audit, which is this site’s whole promise applied to a traditional subject.
A master number, kept not reduced. Born 11 February 1980: 1+9+8+0+0+2+1+1 = 22, and the reduction stops there, because the tradition treats 11, 22 and 33 as master numbers with their own readings. A calculator that ploughed on to 4 would be implementing a different rule than the one its page describes; this one stops and says why.
One name, two systems. MARIA in Pythagorean values is M=4, A=1, R=9, I=9, A=1: total 24, reduced to Expression 6. In Chaldean values the same letters are 4, 1, 2, 1, 1: total 9, already single. The vowels (A, I, A) in Pythagorean are 1+9+1 = 11, a master number kept as the Soul Urge; the consonants (M, R) are 4+9 = 13, reduced to Personality 4. Same name, two faithful answers, and the difference is the tables, visible above.
Reading your results
Read the chains first and the numbers second: a result whose steps you can reproduce is a result you actually hold, and the entertainment readings attached are the tradition’s one-line associations (5 with change and freedom, 8 with material mastery, and so on), offered as folklore. Where two sources give you different numbers for the same name or date, the disagreement is almost always mechanical, a different letter table, a master-number rule, or a Y treated as a vowel, and the printed steps let you find which in a minute.
Limitations
- Entertainment, stated without embarrassment. Numerology has no demonstrated predictive validity, and this page claims none. Its value is cultural, traditional and recreational: the systems are real as systems, documented and faithfully implemented; their interpretations are symbolism.
- Traditions vary in details. Some Chaldean practitioners include 9-valued letters from other alphabets; some Pythagorean schools reduce master numbers in certain positions; name traditions differ on which name to use. This page implements the most widely published forms and prints its tables so its choices are inspectable rather than hidden.
- Names outside A-Z lose letters. Hyphens, spaces and apostrophes are skipped, which matches the tradition; characters from other scripts must be transliterated by the user, and transliteration choices change the values, as the Chaldean tradition itself has always acknowledged.
- Dates use the Gregorian calendar as entered. Historical dates recorded in other calendars should be converted before entry if the tradition being followed expects it; the arithmetic itself is calendar-blind.
Frequently asked questions
How is a Life Path number calculated?
Write the full birth date as digits and add them all, then reduce by repeated digit-summing until one digit (or a master number) remains. For 17 May 1990 the digits sum to 32 and reduce to 5. The alternative method some books use, reducing month, day and year separately before adding, usually lands on the same figure and differs exactly when master numbers appear along the way, which is why this page prints its method and its steps instead of only its answer.
What are master numbers in numerology?
11, 22 and 33: the two-digit numbers the traditions exempt from reduction, read as intensified versions of their roots (2, 4 and 6) with their own associations. The rule matters mechanically: a sum of 22 stops at 22 rather than reducing to 4, changing the headline number, as the second worked example shows. Schools disagree about 33 (some keep only 11 and 22); this calculator keeps all three and flags each one it keeps, so its results can be translated into a stricter school’s terms by reducing the flagged number once more.
Pythagorean or Chaldean, which should I use?
They are different traditions with different tables, and the honest answer is that the choice is one of lineage and taste, not accuracy: the Pythagorean system is the modern Western default, simpler and cycling 1 to 9; the Chaldean is older in claimed origin, assigns values by sound, and famously uses no 9. The worked example shows the practical consequence, one name yielding 6 in one system and 9 in the other, and the calculator implements both so the comparison costs you one dropdown change.
Does numerology predict the future?
No, and this page does not pretend otherwise. Numerology is a traditional symbolic practice; its numbers and readings are presented here for entertainment and cultural interest, faithfully computed and clearly labelled. Personal Year numbers and the rest describe themes the tradition associates with a period; treating them as forecasts, or as a basis for financial, medical, relationship or any other significant decision, goes beyond anything the tradition can support and anything this site will suggest.
